Maxedon Landscaping Articles
Featured Project by Tony Huffman on September 20, 2016
In an article earlier this summer, I boasted that the talented installers at Maxedon Landscaping could take pallets of stone and build works of art.
They proved that statement correct time and again over the summer months with several awe-inspiring projects. Although a multitude of projects transformed outdoor spaces, a few definitely stand out. The combination of cutting edge block and brick products from specialty wholesalers, custom landscape design work and decades of experience helped create some amazing outdoor spaces.
One of these projects came about when Kim and Derek Stout of Charleston inquired about options after tearing an old deck off the back of their home. The Stouts’ provided a clean slate, and we worked together to make their dream a reality. That reality included a two-tiered patio filling a nearly 10-foot grade off the back door of their house. The first tier, shown in attached videos and pictures, involved building a larger wall, which transitioned into dual-faced matching block and cap for a large seating area. The combination of top-of-the-line block, paired with rumbled pavers of similar quality created a seating area looking over the second tier of the patio and their backyard. Pillars – along with low-voltage outdoor lighting – stepped down onto the second tier of the patio.

Before diving into the features of the second tier, which include an outdoor fire place and pizza oven, the steps themselves need additional description and a shout out to their builder. Keven Gillum, a long-time crew leader at Maxedon Landscaping with over 20 years of experience, has perfected the practice of building steps from landscaping block. After considering the distance of fall for the steps, he builds stairs that are integrated into the face of the first wall and lead to the patio below. They have the stately appearance of something out of a European castle while offering the practical necessity of a set of stairs. Great job as always Keven!
Back to the second tier at the Stouts', a larger seating area is centered with an outdoor pizza oven and fire place. These are constructed with concrete panels that are mortared together and then covered with pavers to match the patio. With the concrete guts, mortar and concrete footing, these pieces will grace the backyard of the Stouts for years to come. The Stouts have started cooking pizzas for their kids and enjoying about 1,000 square feet of unique outdoor space. A quick shout out to Maxedon Landscaping owner Ryan Ragland for his guidance during the project, Keven and other crew members for the hard work and especially Kim and Derek for the work. I truly enjoyed seeing this project come off graph paper into reality.
In addition to the Stouts’ project, there have been countless other wall and patio projects. They range from natural stone walls, to covering old concrete pads with patio pavers and everything in between. Again, you really have to see the attached photos to really appreciate the scope of what we can do. As mentioned in my previous post, Maxedon Landscaping provides custom landscape designs and digital renderings, irrigation systems, Rainbow Play Systems, fertilization programs, snow removal, trimming, spraying, shrub removal, hydro-seeding, seeding and more.
Like the project at the Stouts’, if you can dream it, the talented professionals at Maxedon Landscaping can make it a reality.
Hope to see you outside,
Tony Huffman
